We couldn’t mention this special anniversary without remembering some of the amazing women and their incredible contributions to space travel. You will find some of these women in our ‘Women Who Changed History I’ puzzle. They include:
Sally Ride, who on June 18th 1983, rocketed into space aboard Space Shuttle Challenger. Ride became the first American woman to fly in space and is the youngest American astronaut to have flown in space, as she was just 32 at the time!
Mae Jemison, from an early age, aspired to travel in space. With inspiration from predecessors such as Sally Ride, she accomplished her goal of flying in space, but also did so as the first African American woman on September 12, 1992.
Katherine Johnson was well known for her aeronautics work at NASA, where she developed calculations that helped the US launch its first astronaut into space in 1961 and safely land Apollo 11 on the moon 1969.
