Introducing our new ‘Free Form’ and ‘Vine’ cut puzzles

We’re excited to introduce two new puzzle cut patterns that will trick and tease you. We’re so pleased we can finally share with you our new laser cut jigsaw puzzle designs and thought you might like to know a little more about these wooden puzzles and the inspiration behind them.

There is a long history of jigsaw puzzles and during the 19th Century they became not only a form of amusement and education for children, but also a fashionable parlour activity for adults to enjoy. Jigsaw puzzles for adults were often made from wood, featuring intricate designs and complex cut patterns. Themes ranged from scenic landscapes and famous artworks to educational subjects.

The first jigsaw puzzle created by John Spillsbury.

Due to the advances in printing techniques towards the end of the 19th century wooden puzzles could have a high-quality print adhered to their surface, paving the way for more premium, detailed, colourful and unique jigsaws to be made. But it was the invention of the treadle saw that (literally) carved the way for more intricate designs as jigsaw puzzle cutters could manoeuvre wood in new and exciting ways to create more complex and interesting jigsaw puzzle pieces.

1920s Treadle Saw Advert

These advances led to a significant rise in the popularity of jigsaws puzzles towards the end of the 19th century and into the 20th century.  A May 1908 New York Times headline declared:

NEW Puzzle Menaces the City’s Sanity
The picture-puzzle craze has come to town, and for those who are not    staying  awake nights to fit the puzzled together are using them as a sedative to put them to sleep. Young    and old, rich and poor, all hard at work fitting cut-up pictures together. Solitaire is forgotten.

These innovations remain hallmarks of wooden puzzles for adults.

Inspired by classic puzzle cuts from the early 20th century, our talented design team have been hard at work creating these cunning puzzle cuts, perfect for those who love a longer, more challenging puzzle experience. Designed with a confounding combination of shaped whimsies and unique pieces, which means more challenge per piece.
