Stonehenge is one of the world's most famous prehistoric monuments and a masterpiece of Neolithic engineering. Built on Salisbury Plain around 4,500 years ago, it was a place of great spiritual significance for its builders and their descendants, and remains a source of mystery and awe to this day.
At its height, the outermost circle contained 30 upright sarsen stones from the Marlborough Downs, some 19 miles to the north. Inside were up to 80 bluestones brought here from the Preseli Hills in southwest Wales ? over 150 miles away. Its banks, ditches and stones were carefully aligned to mark the movements of the sun and the changing seasons, and it sits at the heart of a remarkable landscape containing over 350 burial mounds and other major prehistoric monuments.
This puzzle?s whimsy pieces are inspired by Stonehenge?s stones, its archaeology and its links with annual summer solstice celebrations.
