The puffin is one of the country's favourite birds and there are few better places to see them up close than on the Farne Islands, in Northumberland.

Each year, thousands of puffins come to the Farne Islands to breed and raise their young. They are true seabirds and return to land only for a short period of time – generally between April and late July. For the remainder of the year the birds fly out to sea, overwintering on the water. A dedicated team of National Trust rangers look after the puffins and other wildlife including grey seals, Arctic terns, eider ducks, guillemots and kittiwakes.

Whimsies are essentially a puzzle piece crafted into a recognisable shape such as a flower or bird and are an historical link to the Victorian puzzle-making past. As the name suggests, the original Victorian puzzle cutters added the individual pieces on a whim and so the term ‘whimsy’ was born. - Do all puzzles have whimsy pieces?
