How would you describe your art?
I draw inspiration from so many things! Life experiences, my own nostalgia, and most especially wandering antique shops and thrift stores, because I adore the unexpected discoveries that are there. You never know what you will find, and it is the best trigger for inspiration! I also am so fortunate to have a wonderfully big art studio that I fill with as much color and vintage detail as possible. People often describe it as walking into one of my puzzles, and I think they are right. I walk in, and it's hard not to be happy and inspired!
Where do you draw inspiration from?
I draw inspiration from so many things! Life experiences, my own nostalgia, and most especially wandering antique shops and thrift stores (I believe you call them charity shops ), because I adore the unexpected discoveries that are there. You never know what you will find, and it is the best trigger for inspiration! I also am so fortunate to have a wonderfully big art studio that I fill with as much color and vintage detail as possible. People often describe it as walking into one of my puzzles, and I think they are right. I walk in, and it’s hard not to be happy and inspired!
Do you have any ‘signature’ techniques, styles or processes that we should look out for in your art?
I feel I am a bit of a jack-of-all-trades, in that I love creating all kinds of subjects and styles. But the main two styles that I think are most recognizable as 'mine' are my tabletop perspective pieces, and my library shelves. Those two design styles have been with me from the beginning, and I find them such fun to create. I also try to tuck a tiny fox somewhere in my art as well! My early art does not have that detail, but all of my new works do. I adore foxes, and love thinking of ways of hiding them, whether they show up as a bit of art on the wall, a tiny figurine, or an actual realistic fox somewhere in the background.
"There is something deeply satisfying knowing my art lives on in their beautifully cut heirloom puzzles that are destined to be treasured, gifted, and passed down for generations." - Aimee Stewart®
How do you feel about your art being made into wooden jigsaw puzzles?
It is wonderous! To have my art become this beautiful, interactive thing for people to do on their own or with their families is truly one of the best feelings ever. I could never have imagined this is what I would be doing for a living as an artist, and honestly it is better than I ever dreamed of. I hear from folks all over the world about how puzzles have helped them, have brought their families closer, and have carried on traditions started by parents and grandparents, and it amazes me! To be a part of all of that through my artwork is really a sincere honor.
Do you ever complete a wooden puzzle yourself?
I do! I grew up with the tradition of putting puzzles together every winter. Now, I adore when my family gets together, and we put together one of my puzzles. I even try to keep one going in my studio, because I want to make sure that they remain fun from the puzzle fan's perspective! I also collect vintage puzzles, and antique children's puzzles.
As an artist what do you feel makes a good jigsaw puzzle image?
For me personally, I have to love what I'm creating. I have to know that if I was to go to the store, I would personally want to buy the thing I'm making. I think that translates into a really wonderful energy that people can feel when they put the puzzle together. If I didn't truly delight in creating it, how are others going to feel about putting it together? I think it really matters! And then of course, colour, detail, and a story! Something relatable, and something with a bit of magic. Even nostalgia is full of magic, in that it can take us right back to a place and time we adore. That's important to me as well!
"Wentworth doesn't just make puzzles, they preserve wonder, and I am delighted to be a part of that tradition." - Aimee Stewart®
