How would you describe your art?
Varied! I work in a number of different styles, from illustration (such as designing for jigsaws) to portraiture (people and pets) so the product really dictates the style of art. Overall, I like to think my work is fun and friendly.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
Home, mainly. I live in North Devon surrounded by beautiful countryside and the local scenery. Flora & fauna definitely influence my work: I really love doing detailed wildlife studies, and things I have seen in my local area often pop up in my jigsaw designs.
Do you have any ‘signature’ techniques, styles or processes that we should look out for in your art?
Nowadays I usually work in acrylics. I started out working in watercolour and coloured pencil, but over the past few years I have moved onto acrylic paint because it is so versatile – the colours are stronger, which works well for the kind of detailed images needed for jigsaw puzzles.
How do you feel about your art being made into a puzzle?
I love it! So many people are passionate about jigsaws, and I really hope that the little details and scenes which I have fun putting into the designs are equally entertaining to put together.
Do you ever complete a puzzle yourself?
Yes, though I don’t get too much spare time. I find that doing the odd puzzle with one of my designs on is really instructive. I can see then what works and what features can be incorporated or changed for future paintings.
As an artist, what do you feel makes a good puzzle image?
Lots of detail, and lots of variety. It’s nice to put in unique details, little things which give a starting point to each segment of the design. Then the person putting the puzzle together can ‘work their way’ into different areas as the whole design comes together.
