21st February 2019Why we celebrate Mothering Sunday

Mothering Sunday is always on the fourth Sunday in Lent and therefore exactly 3 weeks before Easter Day. Easter changes its date every year in connection with the cycle of the Moon. Unlike other Christian holidays, Easter moves its date every year.  In 325AD it was established that Easter would be held on the first Sunday after the first full moon occurring on or after the vernal equinox. But if the full moon falls on a Sunday, Easter is then delayed by a week making sure it still falls after Passover. This means Easter can fall anywhere within a 35 day window between March 22 and April 25. And so as Easter moves so does Mothering Sunday.

A History of Advent Calendars

The tradition is said to date back to the mid-19th century, when German Protestants made chalk marks on doors or lit candles to count the days leading up to Christmas. In the past few years the popularity of Advent calendar has grown enormously, and once again they are not just for children. Alcoholic and various food based calendars, even cheese!, now seem to be everywhere we shop.

15th October 2018The History of Jigsaw Puzzles

The History of Jigsaw Puzzles

The first jigsaw puzzle was created by a map engraver called John Spilsbury, in 1762. He mounted one of his master maps onto wood and then cut around the countries. He gave it to children in the local school to help them with their geography education. And in that act jigsaw puzzles were invented. However it was around the mid 1800’s that jigsaw puzzles started to become popular with adults as well as children.

21st August 2018The year so far - UK Minister for Jigsaws

The year so far - UK Minister for Jigsaws

Our 2018 UK Minister for Jigsaws, Francesca Collis, has been sharing with us what she’s been up to all in the name of promoting jigsaws far and wide.

She often shares her adventures via Facebook and Twitter, with some great images of her friends and family completing a Wentworth Puzzle or two. She runs a competition where all guests have to complete a micro puzzle against the clock. It appears that they really do ‘have to’ complete a micro puzzle. As she finds many people say they’re not that into jigsaw puzzles and then after the experience they start to love them as much as Francesca.

The Rich and Famous who love the Humble Jigsaw Puzzle

Who’s heard of Hugh Jackman? Wolverine from the X-Men and most recently for his latest blockbuster which is causing a huge stir around the world, The Greatest Showman. A wonderful actor with many talents we probably all agree. But did you know how much he loves jigsaw puzzles? If you follow him on Instagram you would. He loves posting about his latest puzzle and how it’s progressing. He also loves to complete them and then instantly break them up again, calling it the pleasure and the pain. He’s a man of discerning taste too, as he loves our puzzles, ‘They are the best’ he states in his latest video where he live streamed himself finishing and then destroying one of our 1500 piece Starry Night jigsaw puzzles by Van Gogh. You an see the whole video on our YouTube channel.

15th May 2018Using jigsaw puzzles to keep the mind active

Using jigsaw puzzles to keep the mind active

Any social interaction or brain stimulation as you get older is important. Keeping as active as possible – both mentally and socially, as well as physically – can boost memory and self esteem, and help to avoid depression. Jigsaws can be ideal for that. For people with short-term memory problems, who might once have taken their stimulation from reading, books can become too complicated as they get older as they struggle to remember what they have already read. But a jigsaw is something that you can come back to and quite literally pick up the pieces from where you left off.
