Celebrating Mother’s Day around the World

A special day to celebrate wonderful mums, Mother’s Day is the perfect chance to show your appreciation with a thoughtful gift. Traditionally, Mother’s Day has been a time to gather the family and give presents with the history of celebrating motherhood tracing all the way back to the Ancient Greeks.

But did you know that Mother’s Day is celebrated in over 40 countries around the world on different days with different traditions? Personally, we like to celebrate Mother’s Day with a puzzle gift, but here is a look at some of the ways the special day is celebrated all around the world:

United Kingdom - Sunday 26 March 2017

Celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent, Mothering Sunday in the U.K has Christian origins from when churchgoers went home to visit their ‘mother’ church once a year. This quickly became popular as a celebration which gathered the whole family together, and servants were given the day off to go home to their parents and exchange cards and gifts.

United States of America - Sunday 14 May 2017

Mother’s Day in America is said to have been popularised in the 1900s due to the efforts of Anna Jarvis. Anna began a letter writing campaign to world leaders following the death of her mother, asking them to recognise the sacrifices mothers made for their children. The idea quickly caught on and flowers became the traditional gift to express their love on the second Sunday of May.

France - Sunday 28 May 2017

In 1950 a law was passed that French mothers would be celebrated on the last Sunday in May as part of the "Fête des Mères". Mothers of large families were especially honoured by receiving the Médaille de la Famille Française (Medal of the French Family), to help counteract the low birth rate of the time.

Spain - Sunday 7 May 2017

In Spain, ‘Dia de la Madres’ is celebrated on the first Sunday in May. According to the Catholic faith, May is the month of the Virgin Mary and so mothers are celebrated at the same time. School children prepare gifts for their mothers and the occasion brings the whole family together.

Germany - Sunday 14 May 2017

In the 1920s Germany had the lowest birthrate in Europe, resulting in the creation of ‘Muttertag’ in 1923. Muttertag celebrated Mothers in the hope to encourage women to bear more children, and just like in France medals were awarded to mothers of large families.

Australia - Sunday 14 May 2017

Traditionally, the Chrysanthemum is given in Australia to mothers as it is naturally in bloom in May and also ends with the word ‘mum’! As in the US, Aussies celebrate their mums on the second Sunday of May.
